Precept #3 – Life is a Mystery

A most mysterious phenomenon of human nature is the self-awarness of one’s own consciousness.  To know that one is alive.  Present.  Locally aware.  Finite in space and time.  Embodied in a physical nature.  It is a most mysterious thing.

To be confined within, behind the eyes, between the ears, above a torso, and within the limits of the capacity of the senses.

Life is a mystery…

Why are we here?  What are we to do?  What is the mission or objective?  How shall we then live?

Questions and no answers.  Religion, philosophers, the mystics…  They claim to know.  They have the secret map to salvation…

To know oneself is to know your limitations.  I am a prisoner of my body.  Subservient to its needs and desires.  Through pain and pleasure, I am obedient.  Always serving the lord.

Life is a mystery…

We know the world through the lense of our physical senses.  It tells us what we should know.  We perceive what is given to us.  The story is invented in our mind.  Everything we perceive is created and induced.  Filtered beautifully…

The nature of communication, limited by sounds, physical cues..  Our thoughts, confined by biology and nature.  Constricted by words…    Everything is bound and walled.  We are fooled into believing we are more, that somehow we can transcend the very nature that restrict us.

We conflate ourselves with our organic anatomy.   Our biological nature is a known and knowable.  It’s science.  It’s the additional layering of self-awareness which complicates.  It asks questions…  It feels alive metaphysically.  It believes it is supernatural.

Life is a mystery…

Life is long.. and goes by quickly…  The conventional life is clear, but not easy…  there’s a layer of self-awarenes that whispers in our ear incessantly… How shall we then live?

Nothing can quite explain the knowing of one’s own aloneness.  Your limitations.  The knowing of self-knowing.  The awareness of the present moment.  The juggling of the past, the present and the future.  — Where are you now?

It’s on the tip of my tongue….  The answers… just right there… then it slips away.. Suddenly…  Gone…Ungraspable.  Unintelligible.

To know that I am here—.  Now—.  Not there—.  Not You—.  But me—.  Here—.  Now—.  In this space—.  In this locale—.  In this time—-.  Trapped—-.  In this body—.  Conscious and aware—.  Knowing….

The answer is unknown.  That is the very nature of this mystery.  It is unknowable.  Our very nature restricts our knowing.

Life will always remain a mystery..
