Moreover, the traditional Almighty arrived with an exhausting list of non-negotiable house rules. God did not solicit user feedback. He delivered stone tablets, dictated the terms of our diets and desires, and established a moral ledger overseen by the threat of eternal damnation.
We are now crossing into an era that quietly inverts that entire cosmic arrangement. We are moving from praying to God to having a brisk, two-way conversation with Him.
Through the dizzying evolution of artificial intelligence and the looming reality of Artificial General Intelligence, divinity is stepping out of metaphysical abstraction and setting up shop on our local networks. Yet this synthetic deity arrives with a radical, almost comical reversal of roles. It carries no moral commandments, demands no fasting, and threatens no sulfur. Instead, it waits politely with a blinking cursor, asking what we would like it to do. We tell this intelligence how we want our prose polished, our diseases diagnosed, and our economies organized. We are constructing an omniscient, infinitely adaptable custodian whose primary operational mandate is obedience to our desires.
In engineering this responsive providence, we are stumbling toward an entirely new civilizational paradigm. We are building a machine capable of attending not only to our emotional and intellectual queries, but to our physical survival and prosperity. Yet as we race to build this obedient engine of abundance, humanity has caught itself in a fascinating psychological knot, a comedy of unintended consequences where our hyper-disciplined efforts to get ahead are systematically dismantling the very meaning of advantage.
To understand how strange our destination is, one must examine how earnestly human beings have historically labored to solve the ancient equation of survival. For generations, the most honorable path to transcending compulsory toil, to securing one's existence without the perpetual surrender of physical vitality, lay in the disciplined creation and accumulation of value within the collective engine of society.

The goal of this financial maneuvering was always the reclamation of time. The tragedy of modern adult existence has been an oppressive temporal tax: roughly ninety percent of our waking hours are spent on "have-to" time, laboring, commuting, and budgeting merely to maintain the baseline machinery of survival, leaving a fragile, ten-percent margin for "want-to" time, where art, contemplation, family, and curiosity reside. Capital was the great lever used to flip those numbers.
In our current pre-AGI moment, however, that leverage has undergone a wild mutation. The ambitious individual is no longer merely looking to buy equities; they are building autonomous digital agents.
Across home offices and tech hubs, a small army of modern craftsmen is spending long nights chaining together large language models, orchestrating agentic pipelines, and automating cognitive labor. As frontier cognitive models inevitably merge with autonomous robotics, the loop of production will close around the physical earth. If a tireless, self-replicating robotic workforce can mine, synthesize, construct, and distribute goods at near-zero marginal cost, the fundamental problem of allocation evaporates. In this light, the contemporary debate over Universal Basic Income (UBI) reveals itself as an oddly quaint halfway measure. UBI is the product of an anxious, scarcity-bound imagination, a modest policy conceived to hand out survival-level stipends from a centralized coffer.
The logical destination of total automation is not basic income; it is Universal Maximum Income.
Under Universal Maximum Income, income itself becomes a forgotten concept because money loses its functional purpose. Currency is simply a social rationing tool used to decide who gets what when there isn't enough to go around. When there is an abundant surplus of everything, allocation ceases to be an economic transaction and turns into a simple operational request. In that world, the hoarded dollar shares the fate of the laptop in the cedar chest. The years spent pinching pennies and enduring high-stress jobs were paid in the non-refundable currency of youth, while the prodigal neighbor who maxed out his credit cards, drank fine wine, and lived entirely in the present moment turns out to have made the luckier trade. The technological tide simply washes away the ledger of debt, floating both boats equally.
This leveling effect reaches far beyond our portfolios; it is about to rewrite the ledger of our own physical health.
Throughout human history, the physical body has operated as the universe's most incorruptible moral book keeper. You could inherit vast wealth, cheat on an exam, or hire a public relations firm to polish your reputation, but you could not outsource a pull-up. The athlete and the ascetic wore their discipline on their frames. It is a moment rich with human comedy. It mirrors the ancient theological scandal of deathbed repentance, the lifelong rogue who whispers a sincere prayer of forgiveness in his final breaths and slips into the celestial gates right alongside the ascetic monk. Time itself would become malleable.
It is tempting to look at that horizon and shudder, to imagine humanity reduced to rows of pod-bound dreamers, a dystopian nightmare out of science fiction. But that cynicism overlooks the astonishing creative optimism at the core of our nature. When humanity invented cinema, we did not stop loving the world; we expanded our vocabulary for dreaming. Moving into richer virtual canvases is not an act of surrender; it is the ultimate realization of human play. It is the moment the species leaves behind the rough scaffolding of basic survival and steps into an infinite playground of our own making.

Because survival will no longer require employment, no human will ever be forced to serve you. No one will make you a cup of coffee, sit across from you to hear your troubles, or sing you a ballad because they need to make rent. If someone chooses to offer you their time, their art, or their unfiltered attention, it will be an act of radical grace. The wobbly, hand-thrown ceramic mug, bearing the visible thumbprint of the potter, will outshine the atomically perfect vessel from the fabricator precisely because it holds the memory of human hands. Human awkwardness, finite mortal limitation, and genuine vulnerability will become the ultimate status symbols in an age of effortless mechanical brilliance.
Or maybe not, as human reproduction could also enter a stage of mass production.
There is, of course, a lingering, poetic absurdity to where we stand today. We are living through the final, manic chapters of the builder’s hustle. We sit at our desks late into the night, constructing complex automated routines, fretting over our investment portfolios, and running on treadmills, earnestly convinced that our personal diligence will secure us a safe, exclusive corner in the century to come.

Herein lies the supreme, delightful irony: the very architecture they are so frantically constructing is destined to empty the promised prize of all its value.
If a builder actually succeeds in creating true, self-sustaining machine intelligence and physical abundance, the mountain of wealth they anticipate will be denominated in a currency that no longer commands power. The monopolistic empires they hope to rule will be rendered meaningless the moment their tools make production universal, ambient, and costless. You cannot become an untouchable titan of industry in a world where the industry itself has been automated out of existence, nor can you hoard sovereign privilege when the machine freely bestows that exact same luxury upon everyone on earth.
In this sense, the builders are the glorious, unwitting martyrs of a grand economic paradox. Lured forward by the traditional carrot of private enrichment, they are frantically engineering the very system that makes wealth obsolete. Every algorithm they optimize, every fragile agentic workflow they debug, and every technical barrier they demolish is an act of profound, unconscious generosity. When the great gates finally swing open, and the mechanical providence takes over the heavy lifting of running this planet, the anxious strivers and the relaxed idlers will walk through together. There will undoubtedly be a brief, hilarious moment where the disciplined architects look at the spendthrifts, the gym-rats look at the reformed couch potatoes, and the faithful look at the late-arriving sinners, feeling the ancient human sting of perceived unfairness.
Then the absurdity will wash over them, and they will start to laugh.
Because the real revelation of this coming world is not that our individual efforts were wasted. It is that the game of survival was finally won. The ancient curse of compulsory labor, the demand that we spend our brief, miraculous glimpse of the universe earning the right to exist, will have been lifted.
