Democracy. The system and idea that individual citizens of a nation or state has a direct influence on the rules, laws and systems that govern their way of life. The idea that everyone may participate in casting their vote for a policy or politician. One person, one vote.
The history of voting rights in America is an interesting one. Originally, the federal government allowed the states to decide on their own voting rules and structure.
Most, if not all states, required you to be male, white, a land owner and a tax payer. The fear was that the majority could tax away property and wealth.
Non-land owning males were soon given voting privileges including blacks, Asians, and females.
Democracy can be expressed in different forms, including popular and direct vs representative democracy. The overall idea is that the people have the final say. The majority wins. The masses rule. The popular vote triumphs.
Does the mob rule?
Democracy without constraint can quickly turn into tyranny. The mob ruling over the outnumbered. Enslaving the minority.
There is no virtue in democracy in and of itself. It must be limited and guarded by the principles of liberty, freedom, a free market and non-aggression.
Any democratic nation that violates these guard rails can quickly turn into a mob rule state, where the majority persecutes the minority. Where the masses enslave the minor.
Any democratic state that violates these principles has things backwards. Democracy doesn’t ensure a free and liberal nation. A nation of liberty and freedom is what ensures a democracy.
In today’s democratic states, these guard rails are being pushed aside. Liberty and Freedom is being compromised. Our free market system is overtaxed. Aggression and force used for our own safety, and to mete out equality.
Demagogue politicians promise free things, morally justify higher taxes and their higher salaries. Group identities are espoused, not individualism. Classes are pitted against classes.
You are sold on victimhood, and matched against those oppressing you. Not unlike a medieval gladiator slave, forced to fight to the death, less you be killed. Our politicians promise you your fair share, while they themselves enjoy the fruits of aristocracy.
The guard rails of freedom and liberty are being destroyed. Politicians want to pillage the grain silos because nobody should be wanting. Just cast your vote, and the riches of the kingdom are yours. Mob rule style.
Once the silos are empty, what happens then?
Our democratically voted leaders are not incentivized to protect our freedoms. They have little world experience, most are career politicians, attorneys or academics. Most have never run a business, and don’t understand the principles of the American Constitution. Most lack basic common sense. The blind leading the blind. Well spoken, never lacking confidence, and full of wind. They are incentivized to get re-elected, at any cost.
A democratic nation without liberty and freedom is an empty state. No better than communism or fascism. The principles of liberty and freedom gives democracy its life. A free market generates wealth and prosperity. Non-Aggression policies enable peace and morality. Without these components, it’s a soulless body.
